Cycling Related Chamber Members

Mountain Bikers love the mild climate, the trail variety and our great scenery. Fat tire enthusiasts think the Rainbow Trail and the Monarch Crest Trail are some of the finest single-track in Colorado. There is a local shuttle that can get you to the top of the Crest Trail, which is twelve miles of single-track along the Continental Divide. The Salida area offers rides suitable for families or the adventurous and some great road biking as well.

There are many camping opportunities in the area. The Forest Service offers a vast selection of U.S. Forest Service Campgrounds located in the surrounding mountains, as well as some State Park Campgrounds along the Arkansas River. If you wish to be closer to civilization with amenities, there are a number of private campgrounds (See Lodging).

Chaffee County is home to the Sawatch Range, which includes 15 peaks of more than 14,000 feet in elevation. Our county has more 14ers than any county in the U.S. Topography maps and guidebooks are available about the 14ers at local businesses in the area.

Chaffee County offers great Off-Road excitement. There are many old railroad grades and mining roads that take you into the mountains to rediscover Colorado's mining and railroad history. For the hearty, you can drive almost to the top of Mount Antero, elevation 14, 269, for some of the most spectacular scenery you have ever seen!

From easy to expert, forests to Aspen groves, we have it all. There is hiking in the Sawatch Range, the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area and the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. You can explore and hike the Colorado Trail, Continental Divide Trail and around the old ghost towns and mining areas. Or just take a stroll along the Salida Trail through our city.

Ride horseback along a mountain trail, or take an old-fashioned wagon ride. We have stables available to provide an hour-long trail ride or extended multi-day pack trip with meals included. Come enjoy the scenery and ride your horse into the sunset along the Colorado Trail.

Hunting and Fishing Chamber Members

The Salida area is well-visited every year during hunting season, for good reason. Deer and Elk are in abundance in the surrounding mountains. Salida has several businesses that provide services for hunters, such as guides, meat processing and taxidermy. Forest Service, BLM, and Division of Wildlife offices are located in Salida for further assistance. For more information on local services, call (877) 772-5432.

Rockclimbing

Visitors can choose from several world renowned climbing venues including Penitente Canyon and Shelf Road. The upper Arkansas Valley also offers many high quality rock climbing outings.

Skateboarding

Salida has it's own skateboarding park in the historic downtown part of the city. The skateboard park is located on First and G Street.

Deep snow in the surrounding mountains, back country wide open bowls and old mining roads make for a snowmobiler's paradise. The chamber can provide business names that provide snowmobile rentals or tours.

The Salida area has some of the best, most fun Forest Service and National Forest trails in the State for Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing. Give Old Monarch Pass a visit, or hook up with a local guide for some great winter outdoor adventuring.

Monarch Ski & Snowboard Area is perched high atop the Continental Divide and has been in operation since 1939. Monarch is renowned for its snow and wide variety of terrain for a small ski area. The ski area lies 20 miles west of Salida on U.S. 50. Monarch has great powder; relatively no lift lines and remains one of Colorado's most affordable, yet excellent skiing experiences. Rentals may be obtained at the ski area, or at one of many other sports-rental businesses in the area.

Whitewater Rafting & Kayaking Chamber Members

The rafting season begins in May and the season extends into September. The Arkansas River offers so much variety that it has become one of the most popular rivers in the nation. Rapids vary from easy Class 1 float trips, to the extreme challenges of Class V and V1 whitewater. The Salida Chamber can provide lists of rafting companies, many of which also provide float fishing. In downtown Salida, there is a new aquatic park developing for freestyle kayaking, which has really grown in popularity for the participant or those that just enjoy watching.

Salida has some excellent antique shops! There is an annual antique show, called "Antique Alley."

Cinemas - Theater and Movie Chamber Members

There are two movie theaters in Salida; our double-cinema, Storyville Cinema, and the Unique Theater. Storyville Cinema also has a lounge-area that serves wine and beer and hosts live music performances.

Ghost Towns

Turn your vehicle into a time-machine by visiting some of our well-preserved mining and railroad towns. North of Salida is the town of Turret, while going further north on Highway 285 leads you to the road to St. Elmo. Still further north, you can visit Tincup, Vicksburg and Winfield, and to the south lies Bonanza, dotted with old mine sites. Be aware that parts of these old towns are privately owned, so please respect their rights when you visit.

Airport & Glider Rides - Aviation and Recreation Chamber Members

Join the staff of B & J Flying Service at the Salida Airport to see the area from above. They offer towing service for gliders, glider-rides and Scenic rides in a Super Cub, in a 25 mile radius of the airport. The Salida Airport also hosts several fly-in events throughout the summer.

Hot Springs - Hot Springs and Water Recreation

The best way to unwind after a day playing in the Colorado Rockies is with a soak at one of our local hot springs. Enjoy indoor or outdoor mineral pools, either in town or out in a mountain setting. Come join us at the Salida Hot Springs Swimming Pool.

Jeep Tours - Jeep Rentals and Guided Tours

Rent them yourself, or take advantage of the guided Jeep Tours available locally, to explore the high country's back roads and mountain lakes and meadows. Whether you're interested in history, rock hounding, wildflowers, or the view from the Continental Divide, Salida's surrounding mountains hold a rich store-house of adventures.

Rockhounding

Modern-day prospectors will find that mineral and fossil treasures abound in Chaffee County. This rich heritage has produced a history of mining evident in the many abandoned mines in the surrounding hills and mountains. Remember to respect private property when pursuing this pastime.

Shopping & Historic Downtown - Shopping in the Heart of the Rockies

The beautifully preserved and restored historic buildings of downtown Salida house some wonderful shopping opportunities. Browse the many art galleries, antique stores, and take home delightful wares from the many shops that feature local artists and crafters.
