August 2010 Business of the Month - KHEN Radio
KHEN Radio and its parent nonprofit Tenderfoot Transmitting Inc., were recently honored as Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce July Business of the Month.
KHEN radio broadcasts to the Salida area at 106.9 FM from a 100-watt low-power transmitter.
Founding manager Jane Carpenter said the station went on the air in February 2003 and has been a chamber member about five years.
The station has one part time employee and 50-100 volunteers who are responsible for on- and off-air production.
“I think it’s really important and exciting that people have an opportunity to have their voices heard on the air,” Carpenter said.
She added that the station tries to incorporate a variety of interviews and alternative sources of news that wouldn’t be heard anywhere else.
Chamber director john Engelbrecht said, “It was great to honor KHEN as the July Salida Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month. Because the entire membership submits nominations for the award, it’s a true recognition of work and service well done in Salida.
“From the first day of operation, KHEN has been a community leader in service and giving back to our town. Hats off to the entire crew of KHEN and please know Salida appreciates all you do.”

New Chamber Member - Salida-area Parks Open Space and Trails
Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed Salida-area Parks Open Space and Trails to membership.
Board members of the all-volunteer organization have diverse interests and extensive backgrounds in obtaining and administering various kinds of grants.
SPOT is an incubator for projects within its areas of interest, including Salida Mountain Trails, www.salidamountaintrails.org; and Hutchinson Homestead Museum and Cultural Center.
The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation registered with Colorado.

New Chamber Member - Upper Arkansas Service Club
Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed the new Upper Arkansas Service Club, to its membership.
Salida Kiwanis Club, Salida Lions Club and Salida Sertoma Club merged March 1 becoming Upper Arkansas Service Club.
Meeting at Salida Cafe and Roastery at noon the first four Thursdays of each month, club members invite everyone to join them for an hour of “good company and meaningful activities.”
The club is committed to serving the Upper Arkansas River Valley, from Coaldale to Maysville; from Poncha Pass to Buena Vista.
Focusing on needs of community youth, the club sponsors an annual Halloween party, an Easter egg hunt and awards scholarships to area students.
Members provide financial assistance for vision and hearing impaired people and offer vision and hearing screening at the 9News Health Fair and annually at schools.
The club partners with other community groups such as Farm to Table, Salvation Army, Support our Salida Schools and Articipate boost their efforts toward good causes.

New Chamber Member - Aardwolf Alpacas
Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed Mike Moser and Phyllis Swenson of Aardwolf Alpacas to its membership.
Aardwolf Alpacas is a full service alpaca ranch east of Cañon City.
Mike and Phyllis welcome ranch visitors in groups or as individuals to view, touch, and learn about alpacas.
They sell alpacas and alpaca products – yarn, socks, hats, scarves and more. They also hold regular felting workshops where visitors can learn about the alpaca and take home a finished product made from fur from their animals.
Aardwolf Alpacas has been in business since 2005 and has 95 alpacas on the ranch.

The event will be a benefit for the SALIDA ROTARY CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, a 501c-3 charity benefiting youth scholarships, activities and organizations of Chaffee County.

EVENT TO BE HELD AT THE STEAM PLANT IN SALIDA , CO.
On AUGUST 27th, 28th and 29th, ten Celebrities will attend the Saturday fly-fishing event; another ten celebrities will attend the golf event. These events will occur on Saturday, August 28th, these events will benefit our youth focused foundation.
The event begins Friday evening with a Public Dinner and Auction. At this dinner you will have a chance to meet the Celebrities, enjoy a gourmet dinner, and participate in the auction to fish with the Celebs, or win the chance to join them for 18 holes of golf.
Silent auctions for golf and fly fishing equipment auctions will also be held, Saturday, the Celebrities will fish all day with a partner who has won an auction to fish with the Celebrity. Four lucky golfers will win the right to play in a Golf Tournament. This Tournament will pay to the top three five-somes, in a Scramble format.
An Auction will be held at the public dinner Friday evening for the second-seat in each Celebrity's boat, and for the ten teams of golfers that will each golf with a celebrity.
