The Salida Chamber is pleased to present our second edition of the "Chamber Open". Eighteen teams will compete in a nine hole scramble format to be held on Friday, August 12th at the Salida Golf Club. There will be a special Happy Hour from 4-7pm with great door prizes and is of course open to the public.

Live music will begin around 6:00pm so dust off your dancein' shoes.

We invite everyone to get a four person team together with at least one member of the opposite sex. Cost for the tournament is just $160 per team. Our member businesses are generously sponsoring the tournament and donating the door prizes. Be sure to let them know how much you appreciate their support.

July Business of the Month - Cloud 9 Chiropractic and Day Spa

Cloud 9 Chiropractic and Day Spa is the Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce July Business of the Month after employees and Vaqueros received the award July 1 at the spa.

Cloud 9 has been in Salida 10 years offering services including chiropractic care, massage, skin care treatment, nail treatment, tanning and waxing.

The spa employs five people with some fluctuation between busier seasons.

Chiropractor Chris Thorgesen owns Cloud 9 and said he donates time and services to the community through the youth football and youth wrestling programs.

He said sports physical clinics are a contribution to the youth programs and he tries to donate as much time as possible to the programs.

Thorgesen said Cloud 9 offers private spa parties.

"We're the only spa that offers private parties that pretty much give people free rein over the spa. Parties include exclusive use of the jacuzzi and services starting at $99," he said.

Chamber director John Engelbrecht said,

"Hats off to Dr. Thorgesen and the entire staff at Cloud 9 Chiropractic and Day Spa. Cloud 9 is the perfect example of how giving back to the community helps businesses become more successful.

Impeccable service, professional care and a big heart made our choice for Business of the Month a simple task."

More information...

All competitors are welcome to use the pool FREE Friday night, Sept. 2 for lap swim and will also receive a half-off coupon to the pool to be used at a later date. This is a great smaller, friendly, local race with a challenging and scenic course.

Kids' Race
For kids ages 5-14. This race is open to kids of all ability levels and is only $20, so come on out and give the sport of triathlon a try! Registration fee includes a t-shirt, light snacks, a participant ribbon and FREE entry into the pool for the remainder of the day.

New in 2011: We will wait 20 minutes after the last competitor in each age group finishes his/her swim before beginning the next age group. This is to eliminate the confusion of past years caused by too many participants out on the course at one time and to allow participants time to warm up. Older competitors will begin first.

Second Rotary Club Created in Salida

Great news for those who wish to serve and improve Salida! There is now a second Rotary Club here: the new Wednesday Breakfast Club.

Rotary, the international service organization with over 1.2 million members and 33,000 clubs throughout the world, has been a part of Chaffee County for over 75 years.

Rotarians have given much to our community, including the Rotary Bandstand in Riverside Park, annual scholarships given to graduating high school seniors, and events including the 4th of July Celebration, the Memorial Day Blue Grass event, and the Celebrity DoubleHaul FlyFishing event.

Rotarians support other events by helping staff the 9 Health Fair, Ride the Rockies, and the Colorado Grand. Rotary also operates internationally by helping fund clean water projects, disaster relief, and the eradication of polio.

The second club is a win-win for our town. More members mean more projects benefiting Salida and the world. The new club was started by those who find a breakfast meeting more convenient. It includes businesspeople, professionals, and retirees—both former Rotarians and new ones.

Want to help? Come to any of these meetings: Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m., the Country Bounty Restaurant, 413 W Hwy 50, Salida. Mondays, 12:00 noon, Salida Golf Course Clubhouse, 404 Grant St, Salida. Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m., Eddyline Restaurant, 926 S. Main Street, Buena Vista.

Which is More Detrimental to Your Health?

Sedentary Lifestyle.
Pack-a-Day Smoking Habit.
100 lbs Overweight.

The answer is; they all are.
Further research into the effects of a lifestyle that includes very little activity (~70% of U.S. population) shows that physical activity is much more valuable than we previously realized.

The following short Q & A is between a WELCOA Consultant (the foremost leading employee wellness group) and Dr Steven Blair, one of the country's prominent researchers in the field of exercise.

P: What types of activities can employers encourage during an 8- or 10-hour day?

B: Well, for those who sit and work at computers, you could offer things like standing desks or even the treadmill desk. I don't think it's a good idea to force employees to stand and work at their computer, but I think it would be nice if employers could make that available as an option. One possibility might be to simply have one room with several standing desks or even some treadmill desks or bicycle desks where people might go for an hour or two. They could take their work with them on a flash drive and get on the treadmill and walk along slowly and that would be beneficial. I think companies should pay more attention to formal worksite physical activity programs. If they can afford to have a gym at the company, I think that's a good idea. Offering discounts for gym memberships is always good. Identifying safe and attractive areas where people can take walks is another great option. I've even heard of worksites that provide mileage if employees ride their bicycle or walk when they have to go to offsite meetings or are out on travel. Now, I know that this is not possible at every worksite, but I guess I'd throw out the challenge to executives and managers to think what might work in their worksite.

P: Do you see this type of physical activity—just being mindful of getting up and maybe walking one flight of stairs and coming back—as something that can be commonly implemented at the workplace?

B: The research on this is building, and I think we need to continue to get this message out there. We need to look for opportunities to stand rather than sit. We have to remember that the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines begin with the statement: More activity is better than less; something is better than nothing. I think that's the message that we need to push a little harder, especially now that the research is beginning to build on this point.
