Saturday, July 21 - “The Emotional Lives of Animals and Why They Matter: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why.” 10:00 a.m., Buena Vista Community Center, 715 East Main Street
What’s in an animal’s mind? What are they thinking? Dr. Bekoff spends his life’s work answering such questions, despite the concept that animals think or have a mind is controversial. “ ‘How do you know animals feel joy or sorrow?’ I’m asked,” Dr. Bekoff says. “We bond with animals because we share emotions. If we feel joy and jealousy, animals do too, but they aren’t experienced identically.”
Dr. Beckon is an ethologist and scientist who studies animal behavior. He is professor of biology at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and a fellow of the Animal Behavior Society, winner of their Exemplar Award for outstanding contribitions to the field of animal behavior. He is co-founder with Jane Goodall of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals: Citizens for Responsible Animal Behavior Studies.
